Short Breaks to Boston

A weekend break in Boston are we mad? This is perhaps one of our more extreme Nano Trips but a short break to Boston is eminently possible. Read below to learn more.

Boston, one of the oldest cities in the United States, offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and modernity for UK tourists seeking a short break. With its cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant neighbourhoods, Boston is an ideal destination for a US weekend break.

Weekend Breaks to Boston from London

London Heathrow has a multiple number of flights allowing a weekend break to Boston. If sticking to the Nano Break rules, a JetBlue flight departs LHR just before 8:30am on Saturday arriving into Boston just after 11am. Multiple airlines fly the London to Boston route so we would suggest looking at either an American or Virgin Atlantic flight on your return  The return flight is an overnight so if you need to be back in work on Monday then try an earlier JetBlue or BA flight. Although this site advocates one night breaks, we realise sometimes two night might get you more time in a city. Thus do look at the late Boston flight flying out from London Heathrow with British Airways just after 8pm on a Friday.

Arriving into Boston

Boston Logan Airport is relatively close to the city and once you clear immigration you can be in Boston in around 30 minutes. The two main transportation options are the T subway or an express bus service which gets you into the centre. Finding accommodation around Quincy Market or the State Subway station allows you to see the majority of the city but also be conveniently placed for your return flight.

A good place to start your condensed Boston adventure is a stroll along the famous Freedom Trail. This 2.5-mile-long path takes you through 16 historical sites, including the Massachusetts State House and the Old North Church. Immerse yourself in the rich history of the American Revolution as you follow the red-brick trail.

For dinner, head to Quincy Market, a bustling food hall in the heart of Boston. With a variety of food stalls and restaurants, it’s an excellent place to sample local cuisine and international flavours. Alternatively, explore the Back Bay neighbourhood, known for its Victorian brownstone homes and upscale shops. Newbury Street offers a range of dining options, from trendy bistros to fine dining establishments.

One way to explore the city is to take a Trolley tour where you can jump on/jump off wherever you feel you want to explore. This can get you around Boston to explore the charming streets of the North End, Boston’s oldest residential neighbourhood. Known for its Italian heritage, the North End boasts narrow streets, historic churches, and, most importantly, some of the best Italian cuisine in the city.

Visit to Harvard Square in nearby Cambridge. Explore the historic Harvard University campus and its iconic landmarks, such as Harvard Yard and Widener Library. Sports enthusiasts should not miss a tour of Fenway Park, the oldest baseball stadium in the country and home to the Boston Red Sox. Even if you’re not catching a game, the history and atmosphere make it a must-see.
